In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
