European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
